Challenges faced by Product Managers
Challenges faced by product managers and how to tackle them
Challenge #1: Influencing without authority
While product managers make plenty of decisions about the product, and overall strategy, they often rely on other team to execute on that vision. This means product managers should lead by influence and earn respect throughout the organization as the expert in both the product and its users.
One of the ideal solution to it is: Lean into the data to support your ideas and show the “why” behind your decisions and share to them how you arrived at a specific decision or proposal. Ensure that you are open to other people’s ideas and really listen to them when they share about their ideas.
Challenge #2: Prioritization
Product manager often struggle to prioritize what to build next. No matter the size of the organization, there will be multiple priorities coming from all directions.
Solution: Leverage quantitative product usage data and qualitative customer feedback to validate product ideas and inform the roadmap. Utilizing data makes it easier to come to a decision and to justify why you are saying no to certain features and requests.
Challenge #3: Managing multiple stakeholders
From customers to company leadership, to the sales team, there are plenty of people who are invested in what the product team is working on. Product managers must manage all these stakeholders, which can require some difficult tradeoffs. You are never going to be able to please everyone.
Solution: Communicate clearly and regularly about current priorities and the product’s future direction. It can be through either one or more from the list of monthly meetings, shared documents, progress trackers, and even public facing product roadmap.
Challenge #4: Budget constraints
Product teams are expected work with less resources.
Solution: Ensure what you are working on is going to deliver a positive business outcome and that you’re not wasting engineering resources. Whether that is reducing costs, increasing customer retention or driving revenue.
Also, know what to build so that we can avoid wasting time.
Challenge 5: Constant change
It can be in the form of new competitor, tumultous economic landscape, or a budding industry trend.
Solution: Stay nimble, curious, and open to change even when you don’t have all the answers
